STEMGenetics
Abstract/Description
STEMGenetics is an innovative partnership utilizing standards- and evidence-based best practices to help teachers prepare students for careers in science and technology, including agriculture sciences, animal and plant sciences, forensics, biotechnology, clinical and public health. Aligned with state standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), STEMGenetics is developed to enhance U.S. students’ global competitiveness in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The STEMGenetics curriculum model utilizes open-source, interactive learning technologies that allow teachers to assess student progress as they work through the curriculum. The curriculum spans elementary, middle, and high school grades to develop and build on students’ understandings of key genetics concepts.

Early research shows that classrooms representing different socio-economic backgrounds have shown significantly improved understanding of life sciences, biology and genetics concepts, after experiencing the STEMGenetics curriculum approach.

STEMGenetics was developed by Michelle Williams and Angela DeBarger. Williams is an associate professor of science education in the College of Education at Michigan State University. DeBarger is a senior research scientist in SRI Education.
