In this section, we explore ways in which improvement research in education is undertaken through a variety of design choices, tools, and methodological approaches. The chapters do not represent the entirety of the methods in this growing and evolving space; rather, the section highlights some key design and methodological approaches that provide exemplars into the novel ways in which improvement research is undertaken. Previous sections have thoughtfully outlined the core foundations of improvement research (section I), the contexts in which the work takes place (section II), and how improvement approaches both share commonalities and variation (section III). In this section, we attempt to provide the reader with a selected set of methods that highlight and expand key elements of improvement research in education. We have intentionally designed the section to both explore designs and methods that are commonly drawn upon in the improvement space as well as push the boundaries to include approaches that are not commonly associated with improvement research in education. Moreover, we strove to provide a user-friendly experience for the reader around approaches and methods.
